The air smells different

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

Day five for this week. Use the prompt however you like, one at a time, or pen a short story over as many as you like.

Note that I will post prompts as usual, but may not respond over the Easter break – visiting family, walking and food!

The air smells different

Deep in the warren, safe in their burrow, the rabbit licks her kittens. They are old enough to complete their weaning and she shifts from their approaching suckling. They mewl, complain, mouths open, seeking the teat. She takes a further step.

Wild rabbits at burrow opening

Today the kittens will venture beyond the burrow, learn the joy of sunshine on their silky fur, savour grasses straight from the soil. Learn to be alone.

She hops ahead, eager for the warmth herself, leading the kittens through tight tunnels until she reaches the bright glow of daylight. She pauses, sends a signal to her young to stay, for now. They cluster in a tight bunch, waiting.

The mother hops from the burrow onto the sandy bank. She stops, lifts her head, her nose wrinkling.

The air smells different. Washed with rain, heavy with pollen, and warm. Her ear twitches as a bumblebee wallows past, seeking nectar. She turns to the kittens, summons them. Spring is here. All is good.
