Day two of this week’s challenge. The story starts here.
Quirky Bridge Low: use these 3 words

I peered at her through the mass of the wig’s tangled hair. I didn’t smile.

Maree faced me, taking a step back.

‘What did you say?’

The fear had returned to her eyes, but it wasn’t that of a woman expecting a physical attack. More fear of the unexplicable.

‘I said, Peter won’t miss you. He’s not back for another two nights.’

‘I said, Peter won’t miss you. He’s not back for another two nights.’

Maree rubbed the bridge of her nose, squinting at me.

‘Is this a joke?’ Her voice trembled.

When Peter hired me to play this out, I thought it would be a bit of quirky fun. Use my acting talents, put them to use somewhere, given the West End hadn’t beckoned recently. Or at all.

‘Make her laugh,’ he’d told me. She’d find it funny. Some running joke about him always knowing where she was.

She wasn’t finding it funny. Her uncertain gaze and tremulous voice unsettled me.

‘Umm, yes it’s meant to be.’ I pushed back the wig. ‘About him always being able to find you.’ Somehow, from my own lips, it sounded more a threat than a joke.
