The attack was over in seconds, the attackers merging into the winter shadows as silently as they had come.
Sides heaving, she lay dazed but conscious, among rain-wet leaves growing wetter with blood. Pain scythed her shoulder. She lifted her head, eyes glazed, wide with terror. A scent on the icy air, familiar.
He was there, standing over her. A dark crimson gash scored his chest. But – her eyes softened – the crimson wetness which soaked his antlers was not his own.
