Jane Harvey’s Hummingbird House series brims with real life characters struggling with life’s messiness, and Coming Home continues the tradition with Harvey’s normal fluid and evocative style.

As the central character, Betty Williams engages us fully with the 1980s story of herself and her longtime friend and admirer Arthur. I won’t do spoilers, but poignant comes to mind.

Harvey does her research, and I love the way she peppers her scenes with bits of 1980s life. Melamine teacups indeed! And those songs! So a trip down memory lane for those of us who were there adds to the beautifully created atmosphere.
And then there’s Paul in the modern day, still in love with April and preparing for a new life in a variation of the blended family. But will the arrangement give him the stability he needs, or are there forces at work undermining this new life before they’ve even unpacked? What’s going on with Kelly and Josh and is the ex really the ogre Kelly portrays him as?
A cosy heartfelt read which can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading these books in order to really revel in the ups and downs of their lives.
