It was a great deal.

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

Day six and the last for this week. Use the prompt however you like, one at a time, or pen a short story over as many as you like.
It was a great deal. Or so he thought.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The mantra his father had bored him stupid with, slid through his mind. And buried itself in hubris. No one would get one over him.

The devil reading a book

He read through the small print on the page, his feeling that nothing could go wrong boosted by the fact of an actual written contract. All good. There it was in black and white.

Invisibility would be his whenever he needed it, at his wish, for as long or as short a period as he wanted.

He gloated, thinking of the trading screens he could examine without suspicion. The women ditto. That one made him grin. The movies he could slip into and watch for free. The conversations he could overhear and pull apart to see how they might be used to his advantage. The planes he could board! No fares, no passports … The possibilities were endless.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. His father’s droning tickled his ear. What’s the price?

There was a price, of course. He knew there’d have to be, but it was still a great deal. All he had to do was to open his mind now and then to the one offering him this brilliant future, share the best of his findings with him. He giggled, high on excitement and whatever he’d taken earlier.

He glanced down at the paper, poised his pen over the signature line and signed gleefully. What a deal! And unbreakable.

Who knew the devil did contracts?
