For those of you who follow my reviews, you’ll know I’m a recent convert to Liane Moriarty. I love her very human characters, her wry insights into human nature, and her ability to write a good low key mystery. Here One Moment didn’t live up to my expectations, however.

On a greatly delayed flight from Hobart to Sydney, a woman walks up the aisle apparently predicting the manner and age of each passenger’s death. For some, it’s great. 103! 102! For six, it’s too soon to be comfortable. The impact the predictions have on their lives is the core of the tale, while at the same time we get to hear the life story of the woman herself. Which, frankly, wasn’t that interesting.
The story seemed a little stretched to me, especially as I didn’t buy in to the explanation. It was like the author started writing and wasn’t quite sure how to get out of the plot corner she’d written herself into. I also became lost sometimes in the number of characters – not just the six but all their friends and families as well – struggling to remember who was who and what prediction they’d received.
My summary: An okay read, but I missed my laugh out loud moments and the totally relatable sense I’ve had with other of her books.
