The art of the novel and kids

Great morning with Forest-born author Sarah Franklin at a local primary school learning about story writing. Sarah showed the students how she worked with wallpaper scrolls and post-its to outline her plot for her novel ‘Shelter’- here’s the WIP..

.

We used a fresh roll to outline their own plot, based on characters they wanted to include (the horse, the dog – oh, and some people too…) and set in wartime in the village (a mishmash of wars – this was historical fiction after all).

Then we broke them into small groups to each write that part of the story. It worked – we ended up with a cohesive tale with two sub-plots! Here they are reading the story out. All part of our Dean Scribblers work
